Luka Fornazaric from Slovenia can call himself the Worlds fastest Wingsuit Pilot after claiming victory at the ProBASE Wingsuit Race in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland.
The competition took place amongst 46 of the world´s best Wingsuit Pilots from 17 nations and ended with the victory of Luka Fornazaric from Slovenia. The competition started on Saturday, 24th of October because of rain the previous day and Luka immediatly showed that he was to be counted as a top contender for the win when he beat one of the favorites, Robert Pecnik, in the first round race. He then led the competition through the 3 qualifying rounds, consistenly flying a time in the high 18ns or low 19ns. Only a few pilots came close to Luka´s times during qualifying, amongst them Robert Pecnik from Croatia, Jean Noel Itzstein from France or Harry Kloska from Germany. French newcomer Ludovic Woerth also showed great consistency as well as the Swiss local, Moritz Schellenberg, who improved with every round.
In the semi final round which was flown on Sunday, October 25th, the field had shrunk to 16 pilots and the elimination started. Harry Kloska from Team BBC was the fastest pilot in this round and his time earned him a slot in the gold final, against Luka. Ludo Woerth set himself up for the Bronze final with a fantastic time and was to compete against Moritz, who again improving his time, moved into the 4th spot. The 5th place race was going to be held between Robert Pecnik and Chec contender Martin Trdla, and the final 2 spots for place 7 went to Neil Amonson from the US against Swiss Fabian Binggeli.
The finals where opened with several exhibition jumps, in particular a noteworthy fly-by with smoke by the ProBASE organizers Hubert Schober and Mirko Schmidt themselves. Just after the organizers had landed their parachutes, the final round went underway. Since it was now double or nothing, the competitiv spirit of the pilots showed resulting in several disqualifications for either low pulls or lane invasion. In the Bronze final Ludo and Moritz crossed the finish line head to head, Ludo winning the race by a nose and thus claiming the Phoenix-fly Phantom2 Wingsuit. Moritz received an X-Shut camera mount for his 4th place. The gold final wasn´t any less spectacular and could only be decided after consulting the finish line camera that had been installed exactly for that purpose. Luka Fornazaric came out ahead, he had timed his opening to a T staying only 2/10 of a second above the limit on the canopy ride, closely avoiding a 2 second time penalty. Luka claimed not only the Phoenix-fly V3 wingsuit for the win, he also received an original 7kg swiss cowbell with the event logo engraved in the belt. Harry Kloska took home a brand new LD2 container from adrenalin BASE for his 2nd place.
After the final competition round everyone was relieved and pleased that the weekend had finished with no major incidents. Spectators, competitors, local community members, sponsors as well as the organizers agreed that Lauterbrunnen am Stechelberg should host the final for next years ProBASE Worldcup Series.
BASE jumping is the activity of parachuting from a fixed object as opposed to skydiving, which is parachuting from an aircraft. Fixed objects can be buildings, antennas, smoke stacks, bridges, power towers, cliffs, cable cars, dams or any other object high enough to jump from.
